Your BMW and its parts are quite valuable. In fact, BMW is one of the world’s leading producers of high-quality automobiles, and if you’ve ever wondered what those letters stand for, in English it’s Bavarian Motor Works, while the original German is Bayerische Motoren Werke.
As an early 20th century startup, the company initially produced aircraft engines during World War I, and following the war it eventually began manufacturing motorcycles, and the first BMW auto rolled off its assembly lines in 1928.
From that time until the outbreak of World War II, aircraft engines, motorcycles, and automobiles were its main products. During the war, however, it again became primarily a manufacturer of aircraft engines and produced the world’s first jet engine.
BMW’s plants were largely destroyed by Allied bombing during the war, and for several years after the war ended the company struggled to survive largely by producing household goods like pots and pans.
Despite the company’s hard-scrabble post-war existence, BMW’s leaders never gave up on their dream of producing some of the world’s best automobiles, and the company finally returned to the manufacturing of cars in 1952 with production of the BMW 501. This model was soon followed by the BMW 700 and eventually, a line of superb motorcycles that became highly popular in the U.S.
The 1980, 90s, and early years of the 21st century witnessed many changes and advances in the BMW line, including hatchbacks and SUVs, along with a shift to the production of turbocharged engines and eventually, electric/hybrid/fuel cell powered vehicles.
BMW, indeed, has come a long, long way from the days over 100 years ago when its only product was an in-line, 6-cylinder World War I aircraft engine!
