Right up front, we have to concede, Aero Auto Parts is going green!
Although die-hard supporters of internal combustion engines may be hesitant to accept them, electric vehicles (EVs) are here to stay, and their numbers will only increase in the coming years.
If you don’t believe us, consider these statistics related to the future of EVs.
The sales of EVs in 2021 doubled the number of EV sales in 2020.
By 2025 EV sales will make up about 25% of new car sales.
By 2030, EV sales could reach 40% of new car sales
By 2040, amazingly, EV sales could account for nearly ALL of the new car sales!
Other than price – a new EV tends to cost about $10,000 more than a comparable gas-powered model – one of the factors limiting EV sales is range anxiety, the fear that an EV might deplete its batteries and leave you stranded.
As batteries become more powerful, charging stations become more plentiful, and drivers realize that because their limited driving means that range is often not a great factor, EV sales will only increase, as the above statistics indicate.
Electric Vehicle Components That Make an EV Work
To operate, an EV needs six main components.
Battery pack: This is the energy reservoir the EV uses to power the car, as well as the lights and various accessories. Typically EV batteries store direct current (DC) that must be converted to alternating current (AC) before the current is used in the electric motor.
Power inverter: This component converts DC to AC to be used by the vehicle. The inverter also operates when the vehicle is using regenerative braking to convert the AC generated by the electric motors into DC to recharge the vehicle’s batteries.
Electric motor: Obviously, the EV motor is the component that uses power from the batteries to propel the vehicle.
Onboard battery charger: Most EVs have a built-in battery charger. It’s there to limit the amount of power going into the main batteries to prevent damage to them or the electrical circuit the charger is plugged into.
Battery management system (BMS): Its purpose is to manage the current flow into and out of the battery pack to protect the battery pack and extend its life.
Charging port: It’s much like the gasoline port on a traditional vehicle. It’s the place where electric energy from a charging station enters the car to recharge the battery pack.
