Summer Road Trip Checklist

The temperatures are rising, and we’re sure you can wait to get out on the open road with the windows down. However, just because there isn’t snow on the ground and it isn’t below freezing, it doesn’t mean your car doesn’t require special care. Before you head out on your road trip, check out the following to ensure you can safely get to your destination.
Tires
All tires (including the spare) should have correct pressure, which depends on what kind of car and tires you have. To find out what the desired pressure is for your vehicle, check the manufacturer recommendation, generally located on the side of the driver side door or on the glove compartment door. Keep in mind that tire pressure increases as the temperature outside increases, so check the pressure regularly.
It’s important to make sure your tire has acceptable treat before heading out on the road. Minimum tread depth is 3/32 inch, but you want to be well above the minimum tread if you will be driving long distances. Look for uneven wear as it is a sign that you need to align your wheels.
Oil
Keep track of when you need to have your oil changed. Your engine needs extra lubrication in hot weather, so it is especially important in spring and summer. Refer to your owner’s manual for what oil is best when it is warmer outside, or in certain situations like pulling a trailer on a camping trip.
Air Conditioning
What could be worse than sitting in a packed car for an hours-long road trip when the air conditioning doesn’t work? Check to make sure the AC is blowing cool air, and take your vehicle into the mechanic so they can ensure the system is fully charged and prepared to take on the summer heat.
