Virtual Windshield Allows Drivers to See Through Other Vehicles

It’s happened to all of us: you’re driving on the freeway, get stuck behind a semi truck or other large vehicle, and aren’t sure if it’s safe to pass, since you can’t see into the other lane.
The solution to this problem? The See Through System (STS), also known as a virtual windshield, that allows drivers to see through other vehicles to eliminate blind spots.
STS technology uses low-latency video streaming and dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) to project images of the road ahead, even when the driver’s view is blocked.
Cameras are mounted on the front of a vehicle to record video what is happening, which is then transmitted to following vehicles through the DSRC, similar to Wi-fi communication.
The images are shown on a screen mounted in front of the driver of the following car, giving them the illusion of “seeing through” the vehicle in front of them.
This virtual windshield is similar to the Car 2 Car communication technologies being developed by BMW, Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. These technologies are using DSRC to send audible and visual warnings to the driver.
